Question how to sell on craigslist?

I am looking for a way to sell my stuff and so far this site has scared the $hit out of me. I will never go near eBay. eBay is like your parents policing everything that you do and how you do it. Paypal is like a thief that takes your money and runs with it.

My first thought had been to sell on ebay and use paypal since it seems to be the most popular option. I was doing some research online and looking for reviews and the majority of people does not seem happy at all with paypal and eBay.

I have been thinking about just using craigs list but then how would I collect payment on items that I ship. I would not want to do checks, takes to long and can bounce.

Is there anyone that is selling on craigs list instead of using ebay and if so how do yo go about it?

I don't have any experience using craigslist I am using ebay to sell but NOT paypal.

I am using a merchant account that I linked to my ebay store and that way I dont have to deal with paypal at all.

If you are thinking about using Craigs list for your sales you can just use a merchant account with a virtual terminal/payment gateway. The same Thing I am using with my ebay account. You can also take payments right on your smart phone if you have one of those.

Check out the alternatives they recommend on this page, that is how I came across the merchant account that I am using.

ebay does not make it known that there are other options then using paypal when selling on ebay. even if call them they will deny it.

I just haven't decided which way I am going to go. I definitely appreciate your information and I have seen seen some good reviews about NMB which is one of the recommended services through this page and would be the one fitting best for my biz since I am located in the US.

Hey, I don't sell on Craigslist but I do have my own website and I started using the merchant account a little over a month ago through National Merchant Bancard that I found on this site and have had a great experience so far. I was lucky enough to not get skrewed over by PP because I was just looking for my best option to take credit cards for my products. These PP stories were my "sign" to look into options OTHER than PP. I don't know how much you plan to sell on craigslist or possibly Ebay but the merchant account is really reasonable and would work in both places...low monthy fee, online application process, quick approval process, once items are sold money is deposited within a couple days, they haven't taken money from me or froze my account so I'm a happy camper just selling my stuff.

I've sold a few items on craigslist, everytime I've done it its been cash, they arent as big as ebay so I'm not sure that anyone would pay by credit card on there. A merchant account is a great option though, I have one for my small business through national merchant bancard.

Craigslist is primarily focused towards in person transactions between locals, but if you really want to use it as a place to sell stuff as a non-local you tend to get flagged. Don't get me wrong, selling on Craigslist is well worth the effort, but you can expect to have issues with having your posts flagged. I generally price the things I sell about 5% lower. It still beats eBay by leaps and bounds though, and is definitely worth the work.
Don't think for a second that you're keeping away from eBay/PayPal though, since one of Craigslist's principal Backers sold their 25% stake in Craigslist to eBay in 2004.

Craigslist is a very active market; like someone else said - it's about the 10th most visited site. The competitive advantage is that you can receive the funds in cash rather than waiting for PayPal. Give it a try - it doesn't hurt, right?

Just don't get mugged or murdered doing your transaction. Meet somewhere very public, during the day, and don't go alone.
