i_buy_and_sell_trash, I could post a fake ebay, paypal, chase, HSBC, et. al. link every day...

Anyone with your name and address can use that in their WHOIS info. They can register it in any name they want and then go in and change it to someone else. It is not really identity theft since your neighbors, co-workers, or anyone you have ever did business with knows your name and address. They can get lists of those and randomly use other peoples name and address in the information. Anyone that assumes WHOIS information is accurate, is clueless since the registrars could care less what is in there.

I have found a web site that is a scam, it is a perfect replica of the PP logon page, should I post it here? Does anyone care?
Oh and to those of you who post all the info you get from WHOIS, all I can say is WATCH IT. If you think identity theft is fun when someone gets your credit card, having someone use your NAME and ADDRESS to register a scam web site is a REAL barrel of laughs. I know, because it happened to me. If you have ever registered a web site, you will know that no one checks if the name and address are for real. In my case, the name and address were ok. The phone number however was fake. It was from a different state (say for example I live in Pleasantville OH and the area code and prefix were for Pleasantville OK). The email address was from a domain in China.
The really fun part is that no one cares if you try to report it. I was not defrauded out of any $$ so it was not considered the classic case of identity theft. I did not however want the FBI waiting for me with handcuffs so I tried my best as an individual to shut the garbage down, including contacting the domain registrars and web hosters and AGs. The domain registrars and web hosters could not care less, as long as they get their $$ from their customers.
So anyway (sorry for ramble, but by posting the mess you get off of WHOIS you may be posting info for an innocent person or organization) is there anyone who cares about these scam web sites?

http://www.logpaypal.com/ If you look at the address bar you will notice it is not paypal.com. In addition you will notice that the site does not recognize your cookies. These both are red flags. I have informed PayPal about this site so it probably will be shut down in a few days, at least it should be.

http://www.paypal-buy.com/ This actually appears to be a spoof site for eBay. I have also forwarded this site to eBay but who knows if they will actually do anything about it.

Btw, both of these are still up.

The first one pings to 216.244.108.52 and has network admin info of:

it took me 60 seconds to do this.

Note: the same technology Paypal's attornies use to track down and threaten sites like this one could be used to find these scammers just as fast as I did and shut them down probably before they even go live! (It takes 24-48 hours for the DNS to propagate and that would give them time to find the network being used to host the domain and inform the admins to shut them down.)

Be careful if u receive a message supposedly from eBay.com (looks very convincing, comes from aw-confirm@eBay.com, NOT fraud-obvious reply3.ebay.com etc...) claiming that there have been attempts to log into your ebay acct from a foreign IP address, and asking you to verify all your info in the link provided.

1st check that "foreign IP address" using WHOIS database. It will be non-existent.

2nd check the IP address this e mail came from. Decide for yourself:

<RFarnham>, it's not. PayPal will never address you by your email address or as "dear PayPal member". Not even for security reasons.

<VVVV>,
This is the lastest spoof. I could not forward a copy to paypal's spoof reporting site. I did a copy and then forwareded to Paypal. Does PayPal ever get any of these people. I have only used PayPal once. How did the spoofers get my email address?

Hell, lately I've been getting emails from the admins at megazone.org telling me my email access will be cut off if I don't go to this webpage and enter a bunch of ID info...

...of course, *I* am the admin of megazone.org. Unless I have a split personality I'm not sending myself such notices. ;-)

There are many, many such scams running out there, PayPal and eBay are hardly unique, they're just big targets. I've seen emails claiming to be from the IRS and other government agencies as well. The idea is just to panic someone into acting before they think about it rationally.

Please understand that it is not Paypal\'s fault that their site is being tampered with or that a scammer is attempting to get your information. If that be the case, why not boycot ebay as well?? I get 2-3 PER DAY from a spoof ebay.

Alot of this crap originates overseas. Vietnam, China, Korea are the worst. I have a friend in control of a series of Cisco routers that feed three datacenters. He has blocked the entire continent of Asia from all routers. Good advice. I\'d recommend it to anybody with a sensitive site.

I am not a member of PP, because of things I have heard about them. So, I knew this was a scam of some sort. Apparently, they are still trying to dupe people.
